WISH LIST STUFF

Here is my old list.

1.  Bring Sandberg back to the Cubs organization.

2.  Hire a quality manager.  We hired Dale Sveum.

3. Keep Greg Maddux in the front office.

4.  Go after Prince Fielder.  Sounds like it may happen. We may even go after Pujols.

5.  Make offer to Aramis Ramirez (this one goes hand-in-hand with number 4 and I’ll explain later)  Does not appear likely.

6.  Trade Carlos Zambrano.  (Even is he says it won’t happen again I know it will)

7.  Trade Alfonso Soriano.  Sounds like this could happen.

8.  Sign Kerry Wood again or find him a job with the Cubs.  Might happen.

9.  Strengthen the pitching staff

And here is my new and improved wish list.

1.  Sign Prince Fielder.  He could be the center piece to build around.

2.  Trade Carlos Zambrano to the Marlins.

3.  Trade Alfonso Soriano to any AL team that will take him!

4.  Sign Kerry Wood.

5.  Sign either Paul Maholm or Edwin Jackson.  We need pitching depth.

6.  Wipe the slate clean, don’t sign Prince, trade Soriano & Zambrano.  Then trade Matt Garza to the Reds or Rangers in a huge deal.  Follow that up by trading away Marlon Byrd, Geovany Soto and Randy Wells too.

Whatever direction the Cubs decide to go I hope they start making moves soon.  I just want to know what to expect for the next couple of seasons under Theo and Co..

UPDATING MY WISH LIST

At the beginning of November I created my wish list for the Cubs this off-season.  Here it is and along with a few changes.

So two of my wish’s have already been rejected.  However, the Cubs may pursue Pujols or Fielder which is a good thing.

Maddux, DeJesus, Theo, Pujols and more.

The off-season is about to heat up with next week’s Winter Meetings looming and the Cubs are positioning themselves with some minor moves and rumors.

First, we will not have Greg Maddux back in the organization next year.  He has left us for a similar job with the Texas Rangers and will be a part of the same organization as his brother Mike.  Way to go Theo!  First Sandberg and now Maddux!!!!!  We could have had both Maddux brothers…..oh well.  You better start making some good moves soon and definitely put together a winning team!

Next, it appears we have signed outfielder, David DeJesus, to play right field for the Cubs in 2012 and 2013.  I actually like DeJesus and hope he’s healthy and plays well.

It’s also been rumored that the Cubs are actually interested Pujols and Fielder.  I guess Theo realizes that there won’t be any big time sluggers available for a while and with the new CBA, his ideas of rebuilding through the draft may have changed a bit.  I am in support of going after either of these players.  Even if we don’t sign them I hope we can at least drive the price up.

Overall, Theo has his work cut out for him.  Cubs fans, myself included, want to win now.  We know we have a lot of money coming off the books and expect this new regime to work miracles.  In all reality, I feel next season will be a rebuilding year and I have no problem with that as long as we position ourselves to be competitive in 2013.  However, I am also rooting for a miracle season in 2012.

PRINCE FIELDER-ARAMIS RAMIREZ-DAVID WRIGHT

There has been a lot of speculation about where Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder will land this winter.  While I would love to have either of these players on my team, I think it would be best if the Cubs went for Fielder rather than Pujols.  I may sound crazy saying that, but I have several reasons for this decision.

Albert is older than Prince.

Albert will probably “cost” more than Prince.

Prince would be that coveted left handed power bat the Cubs desire.

Those three reasons are enough for me.

If the Cubs were to sign Fielder, I would love to see Aramis Ramirez stay with the team.  I realize that would require a multi-year deal and I’m not too excited about the idea of giving ARAM anything over two years.  I think he wants at least three years…..so, this probably won’t happen.  I think Ramirez is kind of like Robin and Prince would obviously be Batman.  I think this dynamic duo would drive in a lot of runs in the Cubs lineup.   If the Cubs decide to keep Carlos Pena, then I think it would be foolish to bring Aramis back.  He’s not the go to hitter you need in the middle of the lineup.  He is an excellent complimentary hitter though.  He could provide the protection for someone like Fielder.

If we don’t work out a deal for Ramirez, which sounds realistic, I would love Theo and Co. to look into a possible trade with the Mets for David Wright.   I know that would cost the Cubs a lot of talent that we really don’t have, but I would like to “kick” the tires on this idea and see what happens.

Finally, from everything I keep reading it seems that Mike Maddux is the leader for the vacant managing position with the Cubs.  I hope he gets the job!

RANDOM RANTS

Well, the Cubs have actually played decent baseball as of late.  We’ve won something like 4 consecutive series.  We are finally playing as I had hoped back in April.  There are still some things that need to be figured out for next season though.

1.  What to do with Carlos Zambrano?  I say he’s gone, but who’s going to take him???

2.  Find out if Tyler Colvin can play everyday?  I think he can.

3.  Find a way to improve our starting rotation.

4.  Are we going to resign Pena again or go after Albert or Prince?

I think our rotation will have Dempster and Garza for certain.  Anything after that is up in the air for next season.  I really doubt the Cubs take Big Z back and it’s probably for the best.  I am hoping that Andrew Cashner will be healthy next season too.  I believe he has a high ceiling and the Cubs could use another good arm in the rotation.  I think Randy Wells will be a back of the rotation guy next season.  I like his competitiveness, but he’s a number 4 starter at best.  We could use another quality starter, but I don’t know who that would be as of today.

I think Tyler Colvin needs to play everyday in order to be effective.  I think this season proved that he is one of those guys that can’t be a successful as a platoon or bench player.  The early season platoon with Fukudome hurt his development.  He was sent down to Iowa and is finally hitting the ball since getting called back up and playing more regularly.

While I like Carlos Pena we need someone that can hit over .225.  His power is undeniable, but how many times have I seen him called out on a third strike with runners on base???  It’s killing me!!!!  Go after Albert or Prince!

Finally, I think Quade should have read my blog back in April.  I wanted the Cubs to bat Ramirez third in the lineup and Byrd fifth.  Well, he kept batting Byrd third and the Cubs struggled to score runs.  Look at the difference now though.  ARAM is hitting third and clubbing the ball like we expect from him.  Should have been hitting there all season!

JUST A DREAM OR TWO

Okay, I mentioned that the Cubs should create a contingency plan in case we fall out of the race this season.  After the back to back wins against the Marlins, I’m hoping we get on a hot streak and stay in the race for the NL Central title.  With that said, I wanted to mention some players that I think the Cubs could or should pursue through trades and free agency over the next two years.

I’ll start with hitters first.  While everyone in baseball, including myself, have been interested in the Cubs chances at acquiring Albert Pujols, there is another power hitting slugger that plays first that I would like the Cubs to sign as a free agent at the end of this season.  That’s Prince Fielder.  He’s younger than Pujols by about 5 years, has plenty of power and is a left handed hitter.  Plus, I think he would cost the Cubs less then Pujols.

Another player that I have obsessed about is Chris Davis.  He’s a corner infielder with the Texas Rangers and is only 25 years old.  He has plenty of power and I think he would be a great fit for the Cubs.  We would have to trade for him though and I’m not sure what the Rangers would want from us.

Another free agent at the end of this season is Jose Lopez  of the Colorado Rockies.  He’s still relatively young and hasn’t hit well this year or last year.  However, I think he may be worth a shot if he can start hitting again like he is capable of.  He can play 1B, 2B and 3B.

Another third baseman I like is Kevin Kouzmanoff.  He’s a stud with the glove and I would like to see what he could do in a full season in a hitter’s park.  He’ll be a free agent in 2013.

If you can’t tell, I am wanting some power hitting corner infielders and preferably ones that are younger and just beginning to hit their prime.   I also have some starting pitchers in mind as well.

I’ll start with Jeremy Bonderman.  He’s currently not in baseball to my knowledge even though he’s only 28.  I suggest the Cubs sign him to a minor league contract, if he’d accept, and see what he has left in the tank.  I could see him as a starter or reliever and I think he would help out the team.

I wouldn’t mind us trying to sign Edwin Jackson after this season either.  While it seems like he’s been around forever, he’s won’t turn 28 until September of this year.

There are a few pitchers that will potentially be free agents at the end of next season that I would love to see in a Cubs uniform too.  They are  Matt Cain, Fausto Carmona, Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, Francisco Liriano and Anibal Sanchez.

Finally, there is one pitcher I would love for the Cubs to trade for, but I doubt it happens, and it’s Felix Hernandez.  Imagine King Felix, Big Z and Matt Garza in a starting rotation together!!!!!  There would be a lot of energy on the mound when those guys pitched!

Anyway, I’m just dreaming a bit today.

CONTINGENCY PLAN

With the way the Cubs are playing this season, I think it’s okay to talk about a contingency plan.  Let me explain.  I am not saying that we are throwing in the towel by any means.  However, if another 6-8 weeks go by and we continue to lose more than we win, it may be necessary to start trading players and their contracts.

I think the list of guys that we could put on the trade market is a big one with some good players.  Aramis Ramirez, Marlon Byrd, Kosuke Fukudome and Ryan Dempster being among the biggest names.  I would love for us to be able to move Alfonso Soriano and his huge salary as well, but that would be really difficult.  By potentially moving Byrd and Fukudome we would be opening up spots in our outfield for younger players such as Tyler Colvin, Tony Campana and Brett Jackson.

I would hate to trade Ryan Dempster, but I could see him help a team win a pennant and possibly the World Series.  He just turned 34 a couple of weeks ago and is a great competitor and leader.  I could also see the Cubs trading Randy Wells too.  I don’t think Carlos Zambrano will be traded.  I see him as one of the cornerstone players that the Cubs hope to build a championship caliber team around.

Our bullpen is relatively young with the exception of Kerry Wood and John Grabow.  I want to keep Wood for multiple reasons.  It’s already evident, that he will give the Cubs a home town discount and it’s good to have a veteran leader in the bullpen.

The Cubs are going to have a chance to sign a big name or two this upcoming off season.  Whether it’s Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder or someone else, the Cubs have a ton of money that they will be able to spend after this season is over.  I look for them to go on a spending spree!

Finally, we have Aramis Ramirez who could also be traded.  I don’t want to lose him, but he’s being pitched around a lot this season with little protection in the lineup.  His power numbers are suffering due to this.  In the right lineup, I think he would return to form and help any team win.

When it’s all said and done, I don’t want the Cubs to be sellers.  I won’t us to be buyers!  I want us competing for the division title and a spot in the post season in 2011.  I still think if our team is able to start winning.  I still believe we can win the NL Central.  A lot must go right, but it’s not impossible!

FINALLY!

This is the week many of us baseball fans have waited for all winter.  Pitchers and Catchers Report!  I love those words.  It let’s me know that baseball is back, spring is close and warm days are soon ahead of us.  Baseball is one of my passions and I am a diehard Cubs fan.  Each season brings hope.  Going into 2003 I did not think the Cubs would make it as far as they did.  In 2009 I thought we would go farther than we did.  Last year, well, I was disappointed to say the least.  Yet, winter is almost over now and that is something to be excited about.

The Cubs reached a three year extension with Carlos Marmol avoiding arbitration.  I think the deal is a fair one and both sides should be happy.  I know some believe we overpaid Marmol, but I think we may have paid even more in arbitration if he has another great season.  I guess we will find out if it was a good deal over the next three years.

I read that C.C. Sabathia may opt out of his contract at the end of this season.  That is something that surprises me personally, but being the greedy Cub fan I am, I wouldn’t mind this happening.  As I’ve said numerous times over this winter, we have a ton of money coming off the books after 2011.  We could go on a big shopping spree and C.C. should be on our shopping list if he does opt out.  Other guys I would like to see us sign are Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez and Rickie Weeks.

Since I mentioned Albert (again) I am surprised that he and the Cards haven’t reached an agreement yet.  If I’m the Cards I offer the 9th and 10th years that Albert wants.  I try to make them vesting options if at all possible.  Have a minimum games played option or something similar to that.

Even though our minor league system lost several key players in the Matt Garza deal we still have some talent that could reach the majors this season in Jay Jackson, Brett Jackson (no relation to my knowledge), Chris Carpenter and Trey McNutt.  So, we still have talent available that can help our team.  We also have a few guys that I really like in the lower levels.  I think I will write a post on them soon.

Yesterday it was in the 50s where I live.  I had the opportunity to take my son, 3, outside and pitch to him for a little bit.  He loves to play baseball and that make his daddy happy.  We played for only a short time, but it was still great to play a little baseball in February.

Finally, I wish everyone the best this upcoming spring training.  It’s a time of hope for every team and their fans!

POTENTIAL FREE AGENTS AFTER THIS SEASON

Jim Hendry and the Cubs filled the needs we had this offseason by signing Carlos Pena to play first base, Kerry Wood to bolster the bullpen and trading for Matt Garza to strengthen the rotation.  I don’t think we will make any more major moves, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see another trade or two go down.  I can see us trading Carlos Silva, Randy Wells and/or Tom Gorzelanny to make room in the starting rotation for Jeff Samardzija, Andrew Cashner and/or Casey Coleman.

Now that I am looking ahead I want to take a look at potential free agents after this upcoming season.  I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but there are a lot of players out there that we could sign to make our team one of the leading contenders in 2012.  We have a lot of money coming off the books at the end of this season and there are some big names that would be available that I would love to see playing for the Cubs.  So, here’s my list of players in no particular order.  If I’ve missed a player or two let me know.

Albert Pujols.jpgOkay, I know that thinking we could land Albert Pujols is more of a dream than even close to reality.  But this is my dream and I’m in control of it.  Albert is the best player in baseball.  It sucks for me because he plays for our Arch rival, the Cardinals.  Yet, you have to love watching him hit.  I’ve been to several games at Busch Stadium, I live a lot closer to St. Louis than Chicago, and the ball just sounds different when he hits it.  So, if for some amazing reason, Pujols is a free agent after this season I say we load up an offer that would dwarf Alfonso Soriano’s deal.  However, I see the Cards signing him before spring training, but I could be wrong.

If Pujols isn’t available, I say we go after Adrian Gonzalez.  He hasn’t signed an extension with Boston yet, and he’s a stud too.  He’s been an obsession of mine for quite some time now.  He’s a great hitter and I think he would hit 40+ homers in Wrigley every year.  Plus, he plays great defense.  He’s two years younger than Pujols and a lefty.  I don’t see this one happening either.  Instead, I see Gonzalez pounding out homers and playing gold glove defense in beantown for several years to come.  With Pedroia and Crawford batting in front of him I think he’s a potential leader for RBIs in the American League if not all of baseball.

Prince Fielder.jpgSince I don’t think we have a realistic chance to sign Pujols or Gonzalez, I will give you my first serious potential free agent.  It’s obviously Prince Fielder if you’ve looked at the picture to your left.  If you can’t tell, I think the Cubs need to focus on first base at the end of this season.  I am not completely sold on Carlos Pena as the long term solution at first base for the Cubs.  Fielder is younger than Pujols and Gonzalez and would provide us with power from the left side of the plate.  His defense is no where close to the previous two firstbasemen, but I can live with that if we are able to sign him.  Just imagine Fielder, who will be 28 in 2012, as our everyday first baseman for the next 5 or 6 years.  He would definitely give the Cubs a power bat in the middle of the lineup.

Rickie Weeks.jpgSince we traded Hak-Ju Lee to the Rays in the Matt Garza deal, it appears we will no longer look to move Starlin Castro to second base.  So, we could easily sign another Brewer to play for the Cubs in Rickie Weeks.  Attempting to sign both players may increase our chances instead of trying to sign only one of them.  Weeks is a tremendous athlete with power and speed.  He’s a better option at second than Blake DeWitt in my opinion and would give the Cubs another good player under the age of 30.  He’ll be 29 in September of this year.

So far, I think we should seriously consider Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks.  That would cover first and second base.  Starlin Castro is our shortstop and we could re-sign Aramis Ramirez to play third.  There aren’t any thirdbasemen that interest me that will be free agents after this season.  I would like to think we could hold on to Ramirez until Josh Vitters is ready.

Grady Sizemore.jpgThe only outfielder that interests me is Grady Sizemore.  He’ll be 29 in August this year and when healthy, is one of the better players in the game.  With Marlon Byrd signed through the 2012 season I don’t see this one happening.  However, Sizemore is a legitimate 30/30 threat and would give us another lefthanded bat in our linuep.  We have Soriano signed through 2014 and I doubt we are able to move him unless we take on a huge chunk of his contract.  Tyler Colvin is our rightfielder for the future.  He’s also lefthanded and possesses some power, but I want to see what he does in a full season for us.  We also have Brett Jackson who I see as our centerfielder of the future.  While signing Sizemore sounds applealing, I doubt it happens.  The main reason for this doubt is the Indians have a club option on Sizemore for 2012 at $8.5 million.  I see them exercising this option.  So, don’t count on Sizemore being a Cub.

There are a few starters I would love to add if the price was right.  I personally have a mild interest in Edwin Jackson and Wandy Rodriguez.  The only pitcher that I think would make a big impact is Roy Oswalt.  Adding him to our rotation would be great.  Maybe a 2-3 year deal would work, but I have a feeling he will stay in Philly.

Overall, I think we will have some moves to make after this upcoming season.  We need to build our team for the long haul.  Adding Weeks and Fielder would be a step in the right direction.

JUST SOME THOUGHTS

Every offseason I pine over players that I want the Cubs to pursue.  In the winter after the 2008 season, I wanted the Cubs to go after Jake Peavy.  Can you blame me?  I guess it’s a good thing we didn’t get him.  He’s only made 33 starts in 2009 and 2010 combined.  This year I wanted the Cubs to attempt to trade for Adrian Gonzalez.  I think he’s a stud and would have solved a lot of problems the Cubs have….lefthanded power, firstbase, good glove and clubhouse leader to name a few.  Anyway, he’s now on the Red Sox and I see him signing an extension with them by next spring.  The next player I am drooling over is Matt Garza.  Ever since I read the first trade rumor that the Cubs may be interested in him I have been thinking how great he would be in our rotation.  If we trade for Garza I hope we keep minor league shortstop Hak-Ju Lee unless we plan on signing Jose Reyes at the end of the 2011 season.  He’ll be a free agent then.  I’m not a big Reyes fan, but he would fill our need at the leadoff spot in our batting order.  Personally, I would like to get a deal done for Garza without trading Lee.

As for firstbase.  I know we signed Carlos Pena to a one year deal and it’s possible that he ends up being playing first for us more than next year.  However, if he doesn’t work out and we don’t resign him after next year I think we need to strongly consider Prince Fielder.  Fielder is young and provides a ton of power from the lefthand side of the plate.  He’s not known for his defense and I’m not sure how good of a leader he is, but it’s an option.

Needless to say, I want Garza pretty bad, but am beginning to think it’s not going to happen.  Only time will tell.  Until then, I need to be patient and trust that Jim Hendry will make the right moves at the right time.
